Zack Snyder explained the case of Army of the Dead 2

Writer-director Zack Snyder clarifies the state of Army of the Dead 2 after the project was first announced in 2021. Released on Netflix in May of 2021, Army of the Dead chronicles a doomed mission to recover a bounty of cash in a zombie-style overrun Las Vegas. The film quickly became one of the most-watched original films in streaming, and while a spinoff prequel called Army of Thieves arrived later that same year, Planet of the Dead, the planned sequel, has yet to come to fruition.

Now, in a recent interview with The Nerd Queens, Snyder gives an update on Army of the Dead 2, confirming that the project is still in the works. The director maintains that the main reason for the delay is his work on Rebel Moon, his upcoming Netflix space opera that may start its franchise universe. Check out Snyder's full commentary below:

"As far as the Army world goes: It's still very much alive and well in my mind. I know exactly what I'm going to do. It depends on how we try to figure out how to move forward with the Rebel Moon and [the] Rebel Moon universe. It's no small commitment, Erupting Moon stuff. A sci-fi thing of this magnitude requires a lot of attention to make it all make sense. It's a very interconnected world."

What do you expect from Army of the Dead 2?

Zack Snyder explained the case of Army of the Dead 2

While it may be a while before Army of the Dead comes to fruition, the franchise still holds a lot of promise. Most of the characters in the original movie are dead by the time the credits roll, but several fan theories make a sequel a tempting proposition. The biggest fan theory raised by Snyder himself is the idea that Dave Bautista's Scott Ward and crew are stuck in a time loop.

Army of the Dead also briefly shows what appears to be a zombie robot, hinting that the movie's world may not be what it appears to be. With so many of these mysteries left unsolved, Army of the Dead 2 probably won't be the kind of straightforward gameplay that was initially expected. In terms of characters the sequel could follow, Scott's daughter, Kate (Ella Purnell), is already the sole human survivor of the campaign, and it's likely she'll return for the follow-up adventure.

However, it is heavily hinted that at least one presumed dead member of the robbery squad could be alive. Dieter Matthias Schweegoffer, who returns in the prequel, is not actually shown dying in Army of the Dead, and Snyder himself has also teased that there may be more to come with this character. While Army of the Dead 2 may not be releasing anytime soon, Snyder hasn't given up on his plans to continue his zombie franchise just yet.
